Every October, the 5th grade students are assigned the task of creating an original vertebrate after we study the differences between vertebrates and invertebrates. The only supplies the students receive to make their backbone are: a pipe cleaner, uncooked pasta wheels, and Life Saver gummies. The students then make a vertebrate and write down the vertebrate's accurate scientific names. Here are some examples of what past students have created for this assignment.
